Tequila Mule (aka Mexican Mule)

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

Mexican mules are a fun tequila-twist on the classic Moscow mule! Smooth, bold, and bright, this tequila mule recipe boasts a nice hint of spicy ginger, which you’d expect from a good mule cocktail.

Truth time: I stayed away from tequila for a long time because, in the handful of times I tried tequila in college, I didn’t have a good experience with it. However, I recently gave tequila another shot (not literally). I tip-toed back into the world of tequilas with a mid-range 100% agave blanco tequila that our local liquor store highly recommended, and it was a delight. And I’m happy to say that tequila drinks are back on the table!

If you love tequila mixed drinks, and are looking for something other than a margarita, this Mexican mule recipe needs to be added into your rotation.

A tequila mule would be great for an at-home happy hour drink, summer drink for a backyard barbeque, for girl’s night, game night, or really anytime you want something fun, bold, and delicious!

WHAT IS A MEXICAN MULE?

A Mexican mule is a play off of the classic Moscow mule that uses tequila instead of vodka. This is a fun twist on a classic cocktail for those who love a good tequila drink!

WHAT IS THE BEST TEQUILA FOR A MEXICAN MULE?

Tequila blanco, also known as white tequila or silver tequila, is the best tequila for this cocktail recipe. This type of tequila is generally unaged (the longest a blanco tequila may be aged is two months), and is often touted as tequila in its purest form.

Silver tequilas really highlight the natural sweetness of the blue agave that they’re made with and are often considered one of the best for mixed drinks. This is due both to its flavor and its price-point (affordable!).

You could also try a joven tequila in the Mexican mule. Joven tequilas are said to be good for bold mixed drinks, making it another suitable option for this recipe.

Joven tequilas are made by blending a small amount of aged tequila with unaged tequila. This results in tequila with some more mature notes in its flavor profile. However, to many tequila connoisseurs, a joven tequila is considered to be inferior to blanco tequila.

Whether you choose a blanco tequila or a joven tequila, make sure the label notes that it’s a 100% agave tequila (not a mixto tequila). This will ensure you have a higher quality tequila for your Mexican mules.

OVERVIEW: HOW TO MAKE A TEQUILA MULE

  1. Fill a copper mug with ice
  2. Add tequila, lime juice, and ginger beer to the mug and stir to combine
  3. Optionally garnish with a lime slice, mint leaves, and/or candied ginger and enjoy!

FAQS

Can I use ginger ale instead of ginger beer in this tequila mule recipe? I would not recommend swapping ginger ale for the ginger beer in this Mexican mule recipe (or in any mule recipe to be honest). Ginger ale does not have that big kick of ginger which you expect in a Moscow mule style cocktail. Ginger ale is also much sweeter than ginger beer, which really is not needed in this type of cocktail.

Why are Moscow mules, and other mule cocktails, served in copper mugs? Besides tradition, it’s said that the copper mugs help to keep this cocktail nice and cold. Plus, when you’re drinking a cocktail out of a copper mug, everyone knows it’s a mule!

What should I use if I don’t have a copper mug? A highball glass or a small Ball jar are great options! Heck, you could use your favorite standard mug if you wanted to.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED:

  • Jigger
  • Bar Spoon
  • Copper Mugs
