A Tequila Mule (aka Mexican Mule) is a fun tequila-twist on the classic Moscow mule! Smooth, bold, and bright, this tequila cocktail boasts a nice hint of spicy ginger, which you’d expect from a good mule cocktail.
My husband and I have been mixing up our own cocktail recipes for nearly 15 years now (it was a cheaper option than going out in our 20s, and in our 30s we don’t have to go out – ha!). Margaritas were our gateway into tequila drinks (with our pineapple margaritas and cranberry margaritas being a personal favorite), but there is just so much more you can do with this distilled spirit.
If you love tequila mixed drinks, this recipe would be a great choice for an at-home happy hour, girls night, game night, or for a backyard barbeque.

What is the Best Tequila for a Mexican Mule Cocktail?
Tequila blanco, also known as white tequila or silver tequila, is the best tequila for this cocktail recipe. This type of tequila is generally unaged (the longest a blanco tequila may be aged is two months), and is often touted as tequila in its purest form.
Silver tequilas really highlight the natural sweetness of the blue agave that they’re made with and are often considered one of the best for mixed drinks. This is due both to its flavor and its price-point (affordable!).
You could also try a joven tequila in the Mexican mule. Joven tequilas are said to be good for bold mixed drinks, making it another suitable option for this recipe.
Joven tequilas are made by blending a small amount of aged tequila with unaged tequila. This results in tequila with some more mature notes in its flavor profile. However, to many tequila connoisseurs, a joven tequila is considered to be inferior to blanco tequila.
Whether you choose a blanco tequila or a joven tequila, make sure the label notes that it’s a 100% agave tequila (not a mixto tequila). This will ensure you have a higher quality tequila for your Mexican mules.

Tequila Mule Recipe FAQS
Can I use ginger ale instead of ginger beer in this tequila mule recipe? I would not recommend swapping ginger ale for the ginger beer in this Mexican mule recipe (or in any mule recipe to be honest). Ginger ale does not have that big kick of ginger which you expect in a Moscow mule style cocktail. Ginger ale is also much sweeter than ginger beer, which really is not needed in this type of cocktail.
Why are Moscow mules, and other mule cocktails, served in copper mugs? Besides tradition, it’s said that the copper mugs help to keep this cocktail nice and cold. Plus, when you’re drinking a cocktail out of a copper mug, everyone knows it’s a mule!
What should I use if I don’t have a copper mug? A highball glass or a small Ball jar are great options! Heck, you could use your favorite standard mug if you wanted to.
