Ranch Dip with Sour Cream and Greek Yogurt

Sharing is caring!

Jump to Recipe Jump to Video

We started making this sour cream and Greek yogurt ranch dip recipe because we liked knowing what we were dipping our veggies into and having an extra boost of protein from using yogurt too! We tried A LOT of combinations of our homemade dip to perfect the ratios and ingredients used, and found this 3 ingredient ranch dip to be the winner.

Close up of a bowl of homemade ranch dip on a veggie tray. The bowl is surrounded by lots of cut up vegetables, including: carrots, cucumbers, and bell peppers.

As someone who’s been cooking for myself (and now my family) for over 20 years, I’m always looking for ways to make snacks more nutritious without sacrificing flavor. We initially started making this recipe for a higher protein dip option, and now a few years later, my daughter DEVOURS this dip. She eats a ton of veggies and “spicy pretzels” in the process, and I’m good with that! When making it for her, I generally up the ratio of yogurt to increase the nutrition and she doesn’t even notice. I love that I’m giving her a snack loaded with protein and gut healthy probiotics while she’s happily munching on her veggies. That’s a mom win in my book!

Through extensive testing, I’ve figured out the perfect balance of sour cream to Greek yogurt so the dip is creamy without being too thick or too tangy. I’ve also learned that the ratio is flexible, you can adjust it based on your needs (more yogurt for extra protein, more sour cream for richer flavor), and it still tastes great.

This dip is perfect for snacking or bringing to a party on a veggie tray (or with party spreads like our game day charcuterie board!). This dip is extremely easy to prepare, is high in protein (like our avocado cottage cheese dip), and doesn’t have any strange additives like you often find in store bought dips. This veggie dip is something you can feel good about eating and sharing with your loved ones.

Why You’ll Love This Homemade Ranch Dip

Ready in Under 5 Minutes. Just measure out your ingredients, stir together, and you’re done with fresh homemade dip!

Extra Protein Boost. The Greek yogurt adds more protein than traditional ranch dip while keeping all the creamy, tangy flavor you love.

Simple Ingredients You Can Trust. Know exactly what’s in your dip with just three wholesome ingredients instead of a long list of preservatives and additives.

Creamy and Flavorful. The combination of sour cream and Greek yogurt creates the ideal texture that’s rich and tangy with classic ranch taste in every bite (that you can amp up if desired!).

Greek Yogurt Ranch Dip Ingredients

Ingredient shot (top down) for this 3-ingredient dip recipe. Shows a bowl of sour cream, bowl of plain Greek yogurt, and a tablespoon measure of ranch seasoning on a wooden board. The ingredients are surrounded by lots of veggies and a striped napkin.
  • Sour Cream: I have generally used regular sour cream when making this ranch dip recipe, but using a light sour cream would be a great option to cut out additional calories in this high-protein ranch dip recipe if you’d prefer!
  • Plain Greek Yogurt: Some may label this a Greek yogurt ranch dip from using this ingredient, and I’m ok with that! Greek yogurt adds a wonderful tang that plays off of the creaminess of the sour cream in this ranch dip. Plain Greek yogurt also packs a lot of nutritional punch by being low in fat, low to no sugar (depending on brand), high in protein, and includes probiotics which are great for gut health! I like to use a 2% fat plain Greek yogurt for my dip.
  • Ranch Seasoning: Needed to get the ranch flavor into your dip.

See recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.

How to Make Ranch Dip with Sour Cream

Mix your ingredients together: Place sour cream and yogurt in a medium sized bowl and mix to combine. Add 1 tablespoon of ranch seasoning and stir to combine. Taste and add additional seasoning, ½ tablespoon at a time, if desired.

Serve alongside your favorite vegetables and enjoy!

3 Ingredient Sour Cream Dip Variations

If desired, you can mix in a few different ingredients to change up the flavor of your dip! Try adding one or two of the following options: mix in a small amount of finely chopped shallot or scallion, add a clove of minced fresh garlic, fold in fresh herbs like chopped dill or parsley, add some spice by including a squirt of Sriracha or Mexican-style hot sauce, or add a pop of freshness with some lemon zest.

Serving Homemade Ranch Dip

What to serve this ranch dip with: This 3-ingredient sour cream dip is the perfect add on to a veggie tray, or for snacking on vegetables at home. My husband also really loves this ranch dip with Spicy Chili Naan Crisps (like, eat up all my ranch dip with these like it).

Party tip: if you’re making this as a part of a series of easy party appetizers for a gathering and are not putting all of your ranch dip on your tray to start, keep the remaining portion of your homemade ranch dip in a sealed container in the fridge to refresh throughout the party! I will often bring large bags of pre-cut vegetables with me as well so I can put more veggies out throughout the event as they get eaten up.

Storing Sour Cream Ranch Dip

Store your homemade ranch dip in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does ranch dip get watery?

Since our dip isn’t using buttermilk or milk to make it, your dip may be watery if you’ve dipped fresh veggies or chips directly into the container it’s stored in (transferring moisture to the dip).

How do you thicken sour cream dip?

Since our dip only has 3 ingredients, you can thicken it by adding in more sour cream or more Greek yogurt. I would recommend stirring in about 1 Tablespoon portions until your desired consistency is reached.

What’s the difference between ranch dressing and ranch dip?

Ranch dressing and ranch dip have very similar ingredients, but will vary is proportion and consistency. The dressing is generally made with milk so that it can be poured over a salad. The dip is often made with a mixture of mayonnaise with either sour cream or yogurt (ours skips the mayo!) to have a thicker consistency perfect for dipping!

This receipe was exactly what I was looking for. I wanted to mix sour cream and greek yogurt. And I wanted a smaller portion. I didn’t need a full 16 oz. Thank you. It tasted good!! It was simple quick and easy. I’m chopping up my veggies now so I can dip them into this dip.

This dip made a perfect appetizer at a summer BBQ! I LOVE that it doesnt use a lot of ingredients, which is the case with some homemade dressings and dips. It’s so easy to eat too much sugar and salt with store-bottled ranch, and honestly I like the taste of this better and you get more bang for your buck! What’s nice about something like this too is that you could always throw in a few extra herbs or spices if you wanted a change up in your ranch one day! We had this with bell peppers to dip at the BBQ and it was fantastic, I’m sure it’s great with wings, cucumber, celery, and carrots too! (And for those of you who like to dip your pizza in ranch!)
