This avocado cottage cheese dip is a creamy, high-protein twist on traditional guacamole that’s ready in just 5 minutes! What makes this dip recipe special is the extra creaminess and protein boost from cottage cheese without changing the classic guacamole flavor you love. The result is a silky-smooth dip that’s perfect for serving with tortilla chips, pita chips, or fresh veggies!
I’ve been experimenting with adding cottage cheese to various recipes over the past couple of years (let’s face it, cottage cheese is so hot right now), and this year I’ve been particularly mindful of increasing the amount of protein I’m eating. This avocado dip is one of my favorite discoveries because it scratches the itch for guacamole and is a great snack or appetizer!
Using cottage cheese as a base for dips is honestly genius because it adds protein, keeps the calories down, and creates an incredibly creamy texture when blended. This recipe has become my go-to when I want something healthier than traditional dips but still crave that rich, satisfying taste. Plus, it’s so quick to make that I can whip it up right before guests arrive or when I need a snack for the family!

High in protein. The cottage cheese adds a serious protein boost compared to regular guacamole (about 4x the amount of protein per serving), making this a more filling and nutritious snack.
Ready in 5 minutes. Just blend everything together in a food processor and you’re done!
Creamy and delicious. The cottage cheese creates an incredibly smooth, silky texture that’s even creamier than traditional guacamole.
Great for meal prep. Make it ahead and keep it in the fridge for an easy snack throughout the week.
Ingredients for Avocado and Cottage Cheese Dip
- Avocado. Provides the classic guacamole flavor and healthy fats (about 1 large avocado or two medium avocados will get you the 6 ounces called for).
- Cottage cheese. The protein powerhouse of this dip! Use 1% or 2% cottage cheese for a lighter, lower-fat result. But you can use whatever cottage cheese you happen to have in your fridge too.
- Garlic. Adds aromatic depth and savory flavor.
- Fresh cilantro. Brings that fresh, bright flavor that’s essential for guacamole-style dips (remove the stems before adding).
- Fresh-squeezed lime juice. Adds brightness and helps prevent the avocado from browning.
- Onion powder. Provides oniony flavor without the texture of raw onion (and without the hassle of chopping an onion).
- Salt and pepper. Seasons the dip and enhances all the other flavors.
- Dipping items of choice for serving. Tortilla chips, pita chips, crackers, bell peppers, carrots, cucumbers, celery, radishes, or cherry tomatoes all work great!

Helpful Equipment
You’ll need a small food processor or high-powered blender for this recipe. A food processor works best for getting that silky-smooth texture, but a good blender (like a Vitamix or Ninja) will work too. Just be sure to scrape down the sides a time or two during blending to make sure everything blends evenly.
How to Make Whipped Cottage Cheese Dip
Add everything to the food processor. Add the avocado, cottage cheese, garlic clove, fresh cilantro, lime juice, onion powder, salt, and pepper to a small food processor.
Blend until smooth. Blend until the mixture is completely smooth and creamy, scraping down the sides 1-2x during the process. If it’s too thick to blend easily, add additional lime juice 1 teaspoon at a time to help it blend. Taste and adjust. Taste the dip and add more salt, pepper, or lime juice if needed. Everyone’s preferences are different, so adjust to your liking!
Garnish and serve. Transfer to a serving bowl, and enjoy with your favorite dippers!
Cottage Cheese Dip Variation Ideas
- Use lemon juice instead of lime juice. If you don’t have lime juice on hand, fresh lemon juice works great and gives the dip a slightly different but still delicious citrus flavor.
- Use fresh onion instead of onion powder. Start with 2 tablespoons of minced purple onion (or red onion) for a fresher onion flavor and a bit of texture.
- Amp up the garlic. Add a second garlic clove if you’re a garlic lover! This makes the dip even more flavorful and aromatic.
- Add jalapeño for spice. Blend in half of a jalapeño for added heat. Include the ribs and seeds if you want it extra spicy, or remove them for a milder kick.
- Add a pinch of cumin, cayenne, and/or chili powder for more flavor. I do this when making regular guacamole, so it’s a natural add-in if you’re really going for a guac replacement.
- Try different herbs. If you’d like this to be more of a veggie dip than a guacamole (or just don’t like cilantro), try using fresh parsley and/or the tops of green onions for a different herby twist.
- Make it lactose-free. Use a lactose-free cottage cheese for those who are lactose intolerant but still want the protein boost and creamy texture.
Expert Tips for Making Cottage Cheese Dip for Veggies
Use ripe avocados. For best flavor and texture, use ripe (but not overripe) avocados. You can tell it’s ripe when the avocado gives slightly when you gently squeeze it.
Adjust the consistency with lime juice. If your dip is too thick, add extra lime juice, 1 teaspoon at a time, rather than water. This keeps the flavor bright while thinning it out.
Taste and adjust the seasonings. Everyone’s taste preferences are different, so make sure to taste your dip and adjust the salt, pepper, cilantro, and lime juice to your liking before serving.
Scrape down the sides. Stop the food processor a few times to scrape down the sides to ensure everything blends evenly and you get that smooth, creamy texture throughout.
How to Store Cottage Cheese Dip for Vegetables
Store leftover avocado cottage cheese dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Pressing plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the dip before sealing the container to help prevent browning. The dip may darken slightly on the surface even with this precaution (that’s just the avocado oxidizing), but you can either stir it in or scrape off the top layer.
Give the dip a good stir before serving leftovers, as some separation may occur as it sits. You may want to add a squeeze of fresh lime juice to brighten up the flavors again.
I don’t recommend freezing this dip, as the texture of both the avocado and cottage cheese changes significantly when frozen and thawed.
Avocado Cottage Cheese Dip FAQs
This avocado cottage cheese dip tastes like a creamier, protein-packed version of guacamole! The cottage cheese blends completely smooth, and basically disappears into the dip (you can’t taste it). Instead, it adds extra creaminess and a slight tanginess that complements the avocado beautifully. The overall flavor is fresh, garlicky, and bright from the lime and cilantro.
It’s really difficult to get cottage cheese completely smooth without a food processor or high-powered blender. If you only have a regular blender, it might work but you may need to blend longer and scrape down the sides frequently. A food processor is definitely the easiest way to get that silky texture.
The lime juice in the recipe helps slow down oxidation, but avocado-based dips will naturally darken over time when exposed to air. To minimize browning, press plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the dip before refrigerating. If the top does darken, you can either stir it in or scrape it off before serving.
This dip has more protein than traditional guacamole thanks to the cottage cheese, which makes it more filling and nutritious. It’s also lower in fat since you’re using less avocado and adding cottage cheese instead. Both can be healthy options, depending on what your goals are, but this version gives you extra protein which is great for a more balanced snack! Selecting better-for-you dippers (like whole grain chips or fresh veggies) is another way to ensure either dipping experience is a bit healthier for you too.
