These Cranberry Margaritas are about to become your go-to holiday cocktail! Light, refreshing, and perfectly festive with a gorgeous ruby-red color. They bring restaurant-quality flavor right to your home bar! You can shake up these beauties in under 5 minutes and wow your guests with a cocktail that tastes like it came from a fancy mixologist. The perfect choice for cozy holiday entertaining or whenever you want something special without the fuss.
My husband and I have been perfecting our home bartending skills for over 15 years, starting in our 20s when we realized making great cocktails at home was fun (and budget-friendly!). Now in our 30s and after becoming parents, it’s still fun and we don’t need to find someone to watch the kiddo. We can create cozy nights in, especially during the cold holiday season when snuggling up with homemade cocktail recipes beats braving the cold (and the crowds) any day.
I spent a lot of time testing different cranberry juice types and ratios to get these margaritas just right. They’re not too tart but also not too sweet, resulting in a perfectly balanced drink. Since I always think red and green for Christmas, this vibrant cocktail felt like the perfect festive twist on our beloved classic margaritas. I’ve included step-by-step photos and helpful notes so you can shake up a great marg every time, whether you’re making one for yourself or a whole pitcher for the party!
And if you want to be a little extra, why not mix up a batch of our coconut margaritas and garnish it with cranberries and lime wedges for a white Christmas vibe too?!
Cranberry Margarita Ingredients
- Cranberry Juice. We’re using 100% cranberry juice to make our margaritas! This adds our cranberry flavor as well as the beautiful red hue.
- Fresh Lime Juice. Lime juice is a standard ingredient in margaritas, and it adds a lovely citrus zing to our cocktail. Fresh squeezed always tastes freshest, but if you’re in a pinch, you can use bottled.
- Orange Liqueur. Another common ingredient in margaritas, orange liqueur adds citrus notes and sweetness to our drink. We’re using Grand Marnier (it’s the kind we have in our cabinet), but Cointreau or Triple Sec are both common orange liqueurs used in margaritas.
- Blanco Tequila. A high quality tequila makes a high quality margarita!
- Simple Syrup. Because we’re using 100% cranberry juice, simple syrup helps balance out the tartness of our drink for an enjoyable sipping experience. We always use homemade simple syrup because it’s super easy and quick to make, and you can store a jar of it in your fridge for up to a month.
- Optional Rim: Sparkling Sugar (aka Shimmer Sugar). We’ve added an extra festive rim to our drink by using that extra shiny sugar you may see used on cookies this time of year.
- Optional Garnish: Rosemary Sprig, Slice of Lime, Fresh Cranberries. Adding all of these red and green garnishes really gives this holiday margarita all the Christmas-y vibes. Plus, rosemary adds a depth of flavor and pine-like aroma to your drinking experience.

What’s the Best Tequila for Margaritas?
Tequila blanco, also known as white tequila or silver tequila, is the best tequila for margaritas. This type of tequila is considered the purest form. It is unaged, is clear in color, and is made from 100% blue agave which results in a tequila that highlight the natural sweetness of the agave plant. Blanco tequila is often considered one of the best types of tequila for mixed drinks because of it’s flavor and its price-point (affordable!).
How to Make a Christmas Margarita
If rimming your glass, add a swipe of simple syrup (or lime juice) to your glass and gently roll it in sparkling sugar. Set aside.
Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker with ice.
Tightly cap your shaker, and shake vigorously until the outside of the shaker is very cold (about 15 seconds).
Pour the cranberry margarita into a rocks glass (or margarita glass) with ice.
Garnish as desired, and enjoy!
Cranberry Margarita Variations
- Rim your glasses with salt, sugar, or a mixture! We’re showing our glasses with a sparkling “shimmer” sugar for all the festive vibes, but you can use regular salt, sugar, or a salt/sugar mixture if desired.
- Garnish with sugared cranberries and/or sugared rosemary. For an extra “frosty” look, use sugared cranberries and rosemary sprigs for your garnish.
- Swap in some pomegranate juice for a cranberry pomegranate margarita! Like our cranberry pomegranate mocktail recipe, you can replace up to half of the cranberry juice with pomegranate juice for a fun twist!
- Use cranberry juice cocktail instead of 100% cranberry juice. If you happen to have cranberry cocktail, you can definitely use it in this drink! Since cranberry cocktail is already sweetened, I’d recommend skipping the simple syrup, and tasting your drink after shaking your ingredients together to determine if you’d like it any sweeter.
