Classic Affogato Recipe

Sharing is caring!

Jump to Recipe

An affogato might be the easiest dessert you can make at home, but it feels so elegant and tastes so good! This dessert combines my two absolute favorite things: coffee and ice cream into one simple, impressive treat. You get the best of both worlds with hot espresso melting into cold ice cream, creating an amazing contrast of temperatures and textures. Plus, you can customize it endlessly with different ice cream flavors, a splash of liqueur, or a drizzle of caramel.

If a restaurant has an affogato on the menu and can make it with decaf espresso, I will order it 100% of the time. Because I love these so much, I’ve been making them at home for years as a lovely way to end the day. I’m that person who can’t have caffeine after noon, so I’ve gotten really into making these with decaf espresso in the evenings. Over the years, I’ve experimented with different ratios of ice cream to espresso, different ice cream flavors, and boozy versions (our go-to is with amaretto!). My current favorite? Adding a generous drizzle of caramel before pouring in the espresso. Every variation is delicious, which is the whole appeal.

The beauty of affogato is how adaptable it is. Whether you’re making it for yourself on a quiet evening or impressing guests at a dinner party, it’s the kind of dessert that feels sophisticated but requires minimal effort. You’re literally just pouring hot espresso over cold ice cream!

What is Affogato

Affogato is a classic Italian dessert that means “drowned” in Italian, which perfectly describes how it’s made. You take a scoop (or two!) of cold vanilla ice cream or gelato and literally drown it in hot, freshly brewed espresso. The hot coffee melts the cold ice cream, creating a beautiful blend of temperatures and textures. It’s the perfect marriage of bitter espresso and sweet, creamy ice cream. While it’s simple enough to be a casual treat on a hot day, it’s also elegant enough to serve at a dinner party. The best part? It takes just a few minutes to make!

You’ll Love This Affogato Recipe

Only two main ingredients. All you need is ice cream and espresso (plus optional extras if you want to get creative!).

Ready in 5 minutes. This is one of the easiest desserts you can make at home with almost zero prep required.

Endlessly customizable. Switch up the ice cream flavor, add a splash of liqueur, or drizzle caramel or other toppings for endless variations.

Perfect for any occasion. Serve it to guests for an impressive dessert or enjoy it solo as a simple pick-me-up treat.

Affogato Ingredients

Ingredients for an affogato coffee.
  • Vanilla ice cream. The cold, creamy base that will be melted by the hot espresso. Vanilla is traditional, but feel free to use any flavor you love!
  • Espresso. Freshly brewed hot espresso is essential here. The heat from the espresso melts the ice cream and creates that signature contrast.

All ingredient measurements and recipe details can be found in the recipe card at the bottom of the page.

Expert Tip: Ingredient Quality Matters

With just 2-ingredients, selecting a high-quality ice cream or gelato and a nice espresso is essential for the best affogato at home! This isn’t the time to those calorie-saving ice creams… this is meant to be creamy and indulgent, so grab the good stuff and enjoy it!

Helpful Equipment

You’ll need a way to brew espresso at home. I love the Ninja Luxe Cafe that I was given for my birthday a few years ago, but I understand that type of machine is an investment and honestly, you don’t need anything fancy. A simple Moka Pot is what I used for years before upgrading, and it works great. I’ve found that the Moka Pot worked better on my old electric stove versus my gas stove, so keep that in mind if you’re using one. I have lots of friends who love their Nespresso Machine, which is a good middle ground price-wise. If you don’t have an espresso maker, you can also use very strong brewed coffee as a substitute.

How to Make an Affogato

Process shot showing 2 scoops of ice cream in a short glass.

Scoop the ice cream. Place 1 to 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream or vanilla gelato into a small glass, mug, or dessert bowl.

Process shot showing caramel being drizzled over 2 scoops of ice cream in a short glass, an optional step.

Optional: add extras. Drizzle caramel sauce over the ice cream for a fun little twist (my favorite!), or make an affogato with alcohol by adding a shot of your preferred liqueur. Our go-to is amaretto, but you can try a Frangelico affogato, Baileys affogato, or others too!

Brew the espresso. Brew 2 shots of hot espresso using your espresso machine, Moka Pot, or by making very strong brewed coffee.

Pour and enjoy. Slowly pour the hot espresso over the cold ice cream, pouring it down the side of the glass rather than directly on top if you want the ice cream to stay cold a bit longer. Enjoy immediately!

Affogato Expert Tip: Chill Your Glass

Pop your serving glass into the freezer for 5 to 10 minutes before serving. The cold glass slows down the melting and gives you more time to enjoy the contrast of textures.

Affogato Variation Ideas

  • Make it boozy. If you’d like to enjoy your affogato with alcohol, add a shot of amaretto (our recommendation), Frangelico, Kahlua, Baileys, or any liqueur you love alongside the espresso for an adult twist.
  • Drizzle with caramel. Add a drizzle of caramel or salted caramel sauce over the ice cream before pouring the espresso for extra sweetness.
  • Try different ice cream flavors. Swap vanilla for coffee, chocolate, pistachio, or any flavor you enjoy that would pair nicely with espresso.
  • Top with chocolate, cocoa powder, or biscotti. Sprinkle generously with dark chocolate shavings, add a dusting of cocoa powder, or top with some crushed biscotti for added texture and flavor.
  • Use decaf espresso. If you want to enjoy affogato in the evening without caffeine, simply use decaf espresso instead of regular. It tastes just as delicious!

Affogato Recipe FAQs

Can I make affogato without an espresso machine?

Absolutely! You can brew very strong coffee (about ⅓ cup per serving) and use that instead of espresso. It won’t be quite the same since espresso is more concentrated, but it will still taste delicious and give you that hot-meets-cold experience.

What’s the difference between affogato made with ice cream versus gelato?

Gelato is more traditional in Italy and is slightly denser and creamier than ice cream. However, high-quality vanilla ice cream works beautifully for affogato and may be easier to find in your local grocery store. Either one tastes amazing!

Can I make affogato ahead of time for a dinner party?

You can scoop the ice cream into glasses and freeze them ahead of time, which is a great time-saver! Just brew the espresso fresh when you’re ready to serve and pour it over the frozen ice cream right in front of your guests. It’s impressive and delicious!

Is affogato the same as a coffee float?

They’re similar but not quite the same! Affogato uses espresso and ice cream, while a coffee float typically uses regular brewed coffee. An affogato also emphasizes the contrast of hot espresso and cold ice cream served immediately, whereas a coffee float is often served cold. Both are delicious, just different!

Equipment

  • Handheld Frother
  • Espresso Brewing Device (Espresso Machine, Moka Pot, Nespresso)

Ingredients

  • 1-2 scoops vanilla ice cream or gelato
  • 2 shots freshly brewed espresso (2 shots = approx. 2 ounces)

Instructions

  • Place your desired amount of vanilla ice cream into a small glass, mug, or dessert bowl.
1-2 scoops vanilla ice cream or gelato
  • Optional: if adding a drizzle of caramel, or spiking your affogato, add your desired ingredient(s) to the glass here (see variation ideas below).
  • Brew a double-shot of espresso using your espresso machine or Moka Pot (or by making very strong brewed coffee).
    2 shots freshly brewed espresso
  • Slowly pour the hot espresso down the side of the glass (instead of directly on top of the ice cream). This helps the ice cream hold it's shape and stay cold a bit longer before it starts melting.
  • Serve immediately and enjoy!

Notes

Optional step: chill your glass beforehand! Chilling your glass for 5-10 minutes before using helps keep the ice cream from melting too quickly and makes that contrast between hot espresso and cold ice cream last longer.
Variation Ideas:
  • Make it boozy. Add a shot of amaretto (our recommendation), Frangelico, Kahlua, Baileys, or any liqueur you love alongside the espresso for an adult dessert twist.
  • Drizzle with caramel. Add a drizzle of caramel or salted caramel sauce over the ice cream before pouring the espresso for extra sweetness.
