Strawberry Cold Foam

Sharing is caring!

Jump to Recipe

Strawberry cold foam is one of those coffeehouse drinks that looks fancy but is honestly so easy to make at home! This silky, cloud-like topping transforms a simple iced coffee into something special, and the best part is that it costs a fraction of what you’d pay for a café version. What makes our recipe special is that it uses homemade strawberry syrup (not jam) for the smoothest, fluffiest texture, so you know exactly what’s going into it without weird preservatives or artificial flavoring. Just a handful of simple ingredients and a handheld frother, and you’ve got a café-quality drink in minutes.

Two tall glasses on a tray filled with cold brew coffee topped with a generous portion of strawberry cold foam, a strawberry for garnish with more strawberries, strawberry syrup, and a checkered napkin around them.

As an avid coffee drinker, and a classic, thrifty Midwesterner, I’ve been making homemade coffeehouse drinks for over 15 years now, and making them at home has completely changed my coffee game. They’re cheaper than dropping $5 or more at the café, they taste even better because you control the ingredients, and honestly, I love knowing exactly what I’m putting in my drink. Once I figured out cold foam, I started experimenting with different flavors, and strawberry quickly became one of my favorites. It’s the perfect spring and summer drink, especially paired with our strawberry iced matcha latte!

The beauty of this recipe is how versatile it is. You can use it on cold brew coffee, iced lattes, and iced teas like matcha or chai. The frothy texture and strawberry flavor add a touch of elegance to any cold drink without any fuss. And since you’re using homemade strawberry syrup, you’re getting that fresh fruit flavor without all the questionable ingredients in bottled versions.

What is Cold Foam

Cold foam is a light, airy, whipped topping made by frothing cold milk with air, creating tiny bubbles that stay stable because of the cold temperature. Unlike steamed milk used in hot drinks, cold foam doesn’t melt into your drink right away. Instead, it sits on top as a creamy layer that slowly blends in as you sip, giving you that luxurious texture that makes coffeehouse drinks so appealing.

There are many popular flavors like vanilla sweet cream cold foam, and pumpkin cold foam, but when flavored with strawberry syrup, you get that beautiful pink color plus sweet, fruity flavor in every sip!

You’ll Love This Strawberry Cold Foam Recipe

Tastes like a coffee shop drink. But it’s made at home for a fraction of the cost with ingredients you actually recognize.

Made with homemade strawberry syrup (not strawberry jam) for the smoothest, fluffiest texture. No preservatives or artificial flavoring, just fresh strawberry flavor from real strawberries. Bonus, it can be made with fresh strawberries or frozen!

Ready in minutes. You can have a fancy-looking drink ready in about 5 minutes with just a few ingredients.

So customizable. Use it on cold brew, iced lattes, matcha, chai, or any cold drink that needs a fancy upgrade!

Ingredients for Strawberry Cold Foam

Ingredients needed to make our strawberry cold foam recipe.
  • Strawberry syrup. This is what gives the foam its gorgeous pink color and sweet strawberry flavor! We recommend our quick and easy homemade strawberry syrup for the freshest flavor, but you can use store-bought too.
  • Heavy cream. The key to creamy, luxurious cold foam. The fat content in heavy cream creates that silky texture and helps the foam stay thick.
  • Low-fat milk. Paired with the heavy cream, this creates the ideal balance for cold foam that froths beautifully and sits perfectly on top of your drink. For the photos I used fat-free Fairlife (it’s what we had in our fridge).
  • Vanilla extract. Don’t skip this please! Just a tiny bit enhances the strawberry flavor so much, adding subtle warmth without overpowering the drink.

All ingredient measurements and full recipe details can be found in the recipe card at the bottom of the page.

Helpful Equipment

You’ll need a handheld electric frother to make the cold foam. This is the easiest and most effective method for creating that light, fluffy texture. If you don’t have a frother, you can use a small blender, but I haven’t found the texture to be quite as nice. You could also try vigorously shaking the mixture in a sealed jar, though this takes more effort and the results can be inconsistent.

Add all ingredients into a medium-sized liquid measuring cup (or small container).

Start frothing. Submerge your handheld milk frother into the mixture and turn it on. Be patient! It takes about 2 to 4 minutes for the foam to reach the right consistency, which is thicker and airier than when you started.

Froth until fluffy. You’ll know it’s ready when the mixture has nearly doubled in size and looks thick, cloud-like, and pourable. Stop before it turns into whipped cream consistency.

How to Serve Strawberry Cold Foam

You can use this foam on cold brew coffee, iced lattes, iced chai tea lattes, or on our strawberry matcha latte for a fruity twist! Cold foam works best on cold drinks. Get creative and have fun with it!

Strawberry Cold Foam Variation Ideas

  • Add a splash of almond extract. A tiny bit of almond extract (less than ⅛ teaspoon) paired with the strawberry creates a lovely, subtle flavor combination.
  • Swap the milk type. If you want to go dairy-free, barista-blend oat milk or a mix of almond milk and full-fat coconut cream work best. That said, while I’ve frothed oat milk for hot lattes, I haven’t tested dairy-free cold foam myself, so you may need to play with the ratios a bit to get the texture just right!
  • Drizzle with chocolate sauce or top with a sprinkle of grated chocolate. Both of these pair beautifully with strawberry and adds a touch of indulgence. And if you love a chocolate-strawberry combo, be sure to try our hot chocolate covered strawberry latte too!
  • Top with freeze-dried strawberries. Sprinkle freeze-dried strawberries or a tiny pinch of sea salt on top of the foam for extra texture and flavor.

Expert Tips for Making Strawberry Cold Foam

Use cold ingredients. Start with cold heavy cream and cold milk straight from the fridge. Bonus if your strawberry syrup is cold too! Cold ingredients froth better and create a more stable foam.

Be patient while frothing! It takes about 2 to 4 minutes of frothing to get the perfect texture. It’s worth the wait because the result is cloud-like and luxurious.

Don’t over-froth. Stop frothing once the mixture looks thick and fluffy and has roughly doubled in size. If you keep going, it will turn into whipped cream, which is a different texture altogether.

Best used on cold drinks. Cold foam works best on iced drinks because the cold temperature keeps it fluffy and prevents it from melting too quickly.

Strawberry Cold Foam FAQs

Can I make this without a frother?

You can try using a blender or shaking it vigorously in a sealed jar, but the texture won’t be quite the same. A handheld frother really is the best tool for this recipe and they’re affordable and worth having on hand for making coffeehouse drinks at home.

How long does the cold foam last?

Cold foam is best served and consumed immediately after frothing. It will start to lose its fluffy texture within a few minutes as the bubbles break down, so make it right before you’re ready to drink it rather than ahead of time.

Can I use store-bought strawberry syrup?

Yes, you can! Monin or Torani both make nice ones. However, homemade strawberry syrup tastes so much better, is easy to make, and doesn’t have preservatives, so we recommend making your own.

What if my foam isn’t getting thick?

Make sure you’re using the right ratio of heavy cream to milk (2 tablespoons of each), and be patient! It takes longer than you might think. Also check that your frother is working properly and that you’re submerging it fully in the mixture.

Notes

Recipe Variations and Substitutions
  • Add a splash of almond extract. A teeny-tiny (less than ⅛ teaspoon) bit of almond extract paired with the strawberry creates a lovely, subtle flavor combination.
  • Swap the milk type. If you want to go dairy-free, barista-blend oat milk or a mix of almond milk and full-fat coconut cream work best. That said, while I’ve frothed oat milk for lattes before, I haven’t tested dairy-free cold foam myself, so you may need to play with the ratios a bit to get the texture just right! Please note doing so won’t make an exact replica of the Starbucks version, but it will still be delicious.
  • Drizzle with chocolate sauce or add a sprinkle of grated chocolate. Both of these pair beautifully with strawberry and adds a touch of indulgence.
  • Top with freeze-dried strawberries. Sprinkle crushed freeze-dried strawberries on top of the foam for extra texture and flavor.
Expert Tips
Make sure to use a liquid measuring cup (or vessel for frothing) that has at least 2x the capacity needed for frothing the cold foam. Your cold foam ingredients will at least double in volume when frothing! Using a large enough container helps ensure no mess over the sides (I’ve made this mess, you don’t need to).
