Iced Strawberry Matcha Latte

Sharing is caring!

Jump to Recipe

An iced strawberry matcha latte is the perfect combination of fruity, earthy, and refreshing all in one gorgeous layered drink! This isn’t your basic iced matcha latte. What makes our recipe special is that we layer the matcha green tea with homemade strawberry puree, creamy milk, and top it with our strawberry cold foam for a drink that tastes like something you’d order at a fancy café. Plus, when you make this drink at home, you can control the sweetness level per your preferences and you know exactly what’s going into your drink.

I started drinking matcha after college when my roommate got super into it because of a local teahouse he frequented. Besides it being a hip thing to enjoy at the time, he touted all the antioxidants matcha has, and honestly, that’s what convinced me to try it! Matcha is a pretty earthy beverage on its own, so I’ve found I enjoy it best as a latte where you can balance the earthiness with different sweeteners and flavors. As a classic, thrifty Midwesterner, I’ve been making homemade coffee shop drinks for over 15 years because making them at home is more affordable to do, often pretty easy to pull off, and they often tastes better too!

This strawberry matcha combination was kind of a viral thing last summer, and while a lot of coffeehouses have moved on, I absolutely have not! If you’re like me and loved this combo, now you can make it at home anytime without leaving the comfort of your kitchen. The beautiful layers and fresh strawberry flavor make this drink feel special every time you make it, and it’s the perfect pick-me-up to sip on on a hot day.

You’ll Love This Iced Strawberry Matcha Latte

Tastes like a café drink but costs way less. This recipe helps you make a fancy-looking latte at home with simple ingredients for a fraction of what you’d pay at a coffee shop.

Fresh strawberry flavor. With the optional fresh strawberry puree as the bottom layer, and homemade strawberry syrup in the cold foam topping, this strawberry matcha latte recipe is bursting with FRESH strawberry flavor!

Doesn’t take long to make. This drink comes together quickly once you have the strawberry puree and syrup ready, making it perfect for weekday mornings or weekend treats!

Ingredients for Iced Strawberry Matcha Latte

Ingredients needed to make our iced matcha with strawberry cold foam.
  • Optional strawberry puree (quickly made with just fresh strawberries and granulated sugar!). A great way to add more strawberry flavor and a beautiful red layer to your drink. We recommend straining it so your drink doesn’t end up with any chunks of fruit for a smooth sipping experience.
  • Ice cubes. Keeps your drink nice and cold.
  • Water. Just a little hot water is used to whisk the matcha powder into a smooth, frothy tea.
  • High-quality ceremonial grade matcha powder. Ceremonial grade matcha has the best flavor, smoothest texture, and brightest green color compared to culinary grade. It really does make a difference! I personally love and use Pure Chimp Matcha, but there are many great options out there.
  • Milk of choice. Any milk works here, but I generally use dairy milk (since that’s what we’re using in our cold foam already). However, I love enjoying matcha with oat milk (and that’s what I’d recommend for a dairy-free cold foam too). But feel free to use what every plant-based milks you enjoy!
  • Strawberry cold foam. Top with our quick and easy homemade strawberry cold foam for an extra luxurious touch (see our detailed strawberry cold foam post for full instructions). You only need strawberry syrup, heavy cream, a low-fat milk, and vanilla to make this! Using homemade strawberry syrup gives your drink the best strawberry flavor, but you can use store bought if preferred.

All ingredient measurements and recipe details can be found in the recipe card at the bottom of the page.

Helpful Equipment

You’ll need a way to whisk the matcha. A traditional bamboo whisk is authentic and works beautifully, but a handheld electric frother works just as well (and you’ll be using one for the cold foam already). If you’re making the optional strawberry puree, you’ll need at least a small blender and a fine mesh strainer to remove the seeds.

If using, prepare your strawberry puree. Add the fresh strawberries and sugar to a blender and blend until smooth.

Then strain through a fine mesh strainer to remove seeds and any chunks, using a spoon to press the mixture through as needed. Set aside.

Whisk the matcha. Add the matcha powder to a small bowl with hot water and whisk vigorously with a bamboo whisk or electric frother until the mixture is smooth, frothy, and free of clumps. This should take about 1 to 2 minutes.

Froth until fluffy. Be patient with it, for the best texture this will take 2-4 minutes (and it’s worth every second).

Tips for the BEST Strawberry Matcha with Strawberry Cold Faom

Use ceremonial grade matcha. It’s a bit more expensive than culinary grade, but the flavor, color, and smoothness are noticeably better. Paying for higher quality is worth it here.

Whisk until completely smooth. Take your time whisking the matcha until there are no clumps (no one likes that weird last sip with all the lumps at the bottom of the glass.).

Make the strawberry puree and syrup ahead to save time. You can prepare both the strawberry puree and the strawberry syrup days in advance and keep them in the fridge! Then you can easily assemble the drink fresh when you’re ready to enjoy it.

Iced Strawberry Matcha Variations

  • Make it without the strawberry puree layer. If you don’t like chunks of fruit or prefer a simpler drink, you can skip the strawberry puree and just enjoy the matcha with milk and the strawberry cold foam on top. You still get strawberry flavor from the cold foam!
  • Use a different berry for the puree. Swap the strawberries for blueberries, raspberries, or blackberries for a different fruit flavor while keeping the same drink structure.
  • Add a hint of vanilla. A tiny splash of vanilla extract in the matcha whisking step adds subtle warmth without overpowering the matcha flavor.
  • Use strawberry milk. I mean, why not lean in to all things strawberry?! Either add some homemade strawberry syrup to your favorite milk or grab a pre-made version at the store!

Iced Strawberry Matcha Latte FAQs

Do I have to include the strawberry puree?

No, you don’t have to include the puree and can enjoy an iced matcha with strawberry cold foam! However, visually and flavor-wise, the strawberry puree adds a gorgeous pink layer and increases the strawberry flavor in your drink.

What’s the difference between ceremonial grade and culinary grade matcha?

Ceremonial grade is higher quality with a smoother, sweeter flavor and vibrant green color. It’s traditionally used for tea ceremonies. Culinary grade is more bitter and designed for baking or cooking. For this drink, ceremonial grade is worth the extra cost because you’re tasting the matcha directly!

What if I don’t have a bamboo whisk?

A handheld electric frother works just as well! You can also use a regular fork if that’s all you have on hand. The key is whisking vigorously until the matcha is completely smooth and frothy with no lumps.
