Easy Mixed Fruit Smoothie With Spinach

Sharing is caring!

Jump to Recipe

Mixed fruit smoothies with spinach are a quick and easy option for busy mornings! This easy recipe makes adding extra fruits and vegetables to your diet easy and super tasty too! And it’s super versatile; you can use whatever frozen fruit blend you have on hand, and the mild flavor of spinach means you truly can’t taste the greens once everything is blended together. Whether you’re rushing to get out the door for work, need a nutritious breakfast for your kids, or want a refreshing post workout snack, this smoothie delivers on both convenience and nutrition.

Smoothies are my go-to solution for a quick and nutritious breakfast, and after nearly 15 years of blending them up, I’ve learned what makes a truly great green smoothie. These easy mixed fruit smoothies with spinach have become a staple in our house (along with these cherry berry smoothies and mango pineapple smoothies). I’ve been making versions of this recipe for years, testing different fruit combinations and ratios to find the perfect balance where you get all the nutritional benefits of spinach without actually tasting it. These are delicious, packed with lots of fruits and veggies, and you can make these while you’re still half asleep (I’ll be the first to admit I’m not a morning person…).

Bonus for parents: this is a kid friendly smoothie with spinach (just ask my toddler!). If your kids may not be keen on eating their greens, these smoothies may be a good way for you to get your child a serving of vegetables (hopefully with less whining).

You’ll Love this Spinach and Fruit Smoothie!

Quick and easy to make. Throw everything into your blender, blend, and enjoy! You can have a frozen fruit smoothie ready to go in less than five minutes (even before you’re even caffeinated!).

Great flavor. Many mixed fruit blends have a tropical flair, making this smoothie really fun and delicious. Using orange juice adds a nice citrus element to your smoothie too.

Nutrient-packed breakfast or snack option. A mixed fruit smoothie with spinach is a great way to start your day! It’s also a easy, nutritious option to enjoy between meals.

Frozen Fruit Smoothie Ingredients

  • Frozen Mixed Fruit: I use a blend that has pineapple, mango, strawberries, and peaches.
  • A Medium Banana: You can use a fresh banana or one you’ve thrown into the freezer because it was starting to brown on your counter…both are great options!
  • Fresh Spinach: A highly nutritious add to your smoothie. Spinach is a nutritional powerhouse boasting high volumes of fiber, vitamins, folic acid, iron, and calcium.
  • Ground Flax: A great source of omega-3s, fiber, and a variety of other nutrients, ground flaxseed is a great addition to any smoothie.
  • Plain Greek Yogurt: Adding plain yogurt to your smoothie helps give your breakfast smoothie a nice texture, adds protein, and adds live and active cultures which are good for digestion and gut health.
  • Orange Juice: A popular and accessible juice selection that’s high in vitamin C, folate, and potassium. You can also select varieties that are fortified with calcium and vitamin D.

See recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.

What are the Best Greens for Smoothies?

Spinach is my go-to for green smoothies because it has a mild flavor, meaning it doesn’t overpower the flavor of the rest of the ingredients. Honestly, you can’t even taste the spinach! Adding spinach into your smoothies is a great way to get a serving of vegetables and add a nutritional boost to your smoothie recipe.

Kale, Swiss chard, and collard greens are other popular leafy greens that can also be used in smoothies. Please note that all of these options have a much stronger flavor than spinach and can be somewhat bitter. These options are best paired with sweet fruits and stronger flavors to help mask their flavor.

Helpful Equipment

A good quality blender. This is the blender we are currently using, and it has been working great! I like it because it’s a simple, no-frills option at a modest price point.

How to Make a Smoothie with Frozen Fruit

In the basin of a standard-size blender, pour in half of the juice.

Then add the banana, spinach, flax, yogurt. If adding protein powder, add at this time too.

Then add the frozen fruit.

Top with the remaining juice.

Tightly secure the lid and blend until smooth.

Divide between two-three glasses and enjoy!

Expert Tips for Making a Frozen Fruit Smoothie with Yogurt

Placing part of the liquid in first matters, it helps with blending.

Add your spinach early on when adding your ingredients so heavier ingredients can squish it down (there is A LOT of spinach in here, which is good!). This also helps to make room for more fruit.

How to Store Mixed Fruit Smoothies

This smoothie is best enjoyed immediately after blending for optimal taste and texture. However, if you want to prep ahead for a quick grab and go breakfast, you can make this smoothie the night before with a few tips for success.

Pour your portion into a blender bottle with a tight fitting lid and store it in the refrigerator overnight. The smoothie will naturally settle and separate as it sits, which is completely normal. It may also thicken up a bit overnight. When you’re ready to enjoy it in the morning, just give it a good shake to recombine everything. If it’s too thick, add a splash of water or orange juice to thin it out to your desired consistency, shake again, and enjoy!

For best results, I recommend making smoothies no more than 12 hours in advance. Any longer than that and the texture and flavor start to decline.

Mixed Fruit Smoothie Variations

Use a different liquid. I personally love smoothies with coconut water because it’s low in sugar and full of electrolytes, vitamins, and nutrients. Using unsweetened almond milk is another popular choice for smoothies. Replace the orange juice quantity one-for-one with liquid of choice.

Add additional protein. Adding a serving of either plain or vanilla whey protein, plant-based protein, or collagen is a great option. Note: doing this will thicken your smoothies, so you may want to add some additional liquid (this is a personal preference).

Replace the ground flaxseed. Swap out the ground flax for another nutrient rich ingredient, like chia seeds or hemp hearts.

Possible Dietary Restrictions?

This frozen fruit smoothie recipe can easily be modified to fit a lot of dietary needs! As written, it’s vegetarian and gluten-free. A few notes to make sure this easy green smoothie recipe fits your diet:

  • Make this into a vegan or dairy-free smoothie by selecting a non-dairy yogurt.
  • For those adding the optional protein powder to this smoothie, make sure to select a powder that fits your dietary needs. Those who follow a vegetarian diet can use whey or a plant-based option. Those on a gluten free diet can can also use those if the label notes it’s gf.
  • Those following a dairy free or vegan diet should select a plant-based powder that meets this dietary requirement (verify this on the label).

Spinach Fruit Smoothie FAQs

Should I use frozen fruit or fresh fruit in this smoothie with spinach?

Either is fine for smoothies, but I like to use frozen fruit because it is so convenient. Especially in a recipe like this that has several varieties of fruit in it, buying a bag of frozen mixed fruit is just so easy. No need to buy a large amount of fresh fruit or cut anything. However, if you and/or your family eats a lot of fresh fruit, that may be a better option for you.

Can I make this smoothie ahead of time (ie- the night before)?

Yes you can! If you choose to make this smoothie the night before, I would recommend giving it another quick blend in the morning or placing it in a shaker cup. Note: your smoothie will be a little thicker and the color will be more green if you let it sit overnight. Not a big deal, I just don’t want you to be surprised! Making this the night ahead is a great option if you have a busy morning or need to take your smoothie to go.

What if I don’t have a standard sized blender?

If you have a smaller-sized blender, like a Ninja single-serve or Nutribullet, halve (or quarter) the recipe to fit your needs.

What are the best greens for smoothies?

Spinach is one of the best greens for smoothies because of it’s mild flavor. Once blended with the other smoothie ingredients, you generally can’t even taste it!

Kale, Swiss chard, and collard greens are other popular leafy greens that can also be used in smoothies. Please note that all of these options have a much stronger flavor than spinach and can be somewhat bitter. These options are best paired with sweet fruits and stronger flavors to help mask their flavor.

What fruits go well with spinach in a smoothie?

Pretty much any fruit works well with spinach in a smoothie because spinach has such a mild flavor it pretty much “disappears”! Sweeter fruits are especially great because they completely mask any taste of the spinach. Some of my favorite combinations include tropical fruits like pineapple, mango, and banana, berries like strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries, or stone fruits like peaches. Citrus fruits like oranges also pair beautifully with spinach. The key is using enough fruit so the natural sweetness balances out the greens. I’ve found that frozen fruit works particularly well because it creates a thick, creamy texture while keeping the smoothie cold. Smoothies are a great opportunity to try different flavor combinations, or toss in fruits you have on hand, to see if you find your new favorite combo!
