Why You’ll Love This Easy Fruit Smoothie Recipe
This mixed fruit smoothie with spinach makes adding extra fruits and vegetables to your diet easy and super tasty too!
Quick and easy to make. Throw everything into your blender, blend, and enjoy! You can have a frozen fruit smoothie ready to go in less than five minutes (even before you’re even caffeinated!).
Great flavor. Many mixed fruit blends have a tropical flair, making this smoothie really fun and delicious. Using orange juice adds a nice citrus element to your smoothie too.
Nutrient-packed breakfast or snack option. A mixed fruit smoothie with spinach is a great way to start your day! It’s also a easy, nutritious option to enjoy between meals.
What are the Best Greens for Smoothies?
Spinach is my go-to for green smoothie recipes because it has a mild taste, meaning it doesn’t overpower the flavor of the rest of the ingredients. Honestly, you can’t even taste the spinach! Adding spinach into your smoothies is a great way to get a serving of vegetables and add a nutritional boost to your smoothie recipe.
Kale, Swiss chard, and collard greens are other popular leafy greens that can also be used in smoothies. Please note that all of these options have a much stronger flavor than spinach and can be somewhat bitter. These options are best paired with sweet fruits and stronger flavors to help mask their flavor.
Ingredients Needed for These Spinach Fruit Smoothies
Frozen Mixed Fruit: I use a blend that has pineapple, mango, strawberries, and peaches.
A Medium Banana: You can use a fresh banana or one you’ve thrown into the freezer because it was starting to brown on your counter…both are great options!
Fresh Spinach: A highly nutritious add to your smoothie. Spinach is a nutritional powerhouse boasting high volumes of fiber, vitamins, folic acid, iron, and calcium.
Ground Flax: A great source of omega-3s, fiber, and a variety of other nutrients, ground flaxseed is a great addition to any smoothie recipe.
Plain Greek Yogurt: Adding plain yogurt to your smoothie helps give your breakfast smoothie a nice texture, adds protein, and adds live and active cultures which are good for digestion and gut health.
Orange Juice: A popular and accessible juice selection, orange juice is high in vitamin C, folate, and potassium. You can also select varieties that are fortified with calcium and vitamin D.

Mixed Fruit Smoothie Variations
- Add additional protein. If you would like to add more protein to your mixed fruit smoothies with spinach, adding a serving of either plain or vanilla whey protein, plant-based protein, or collagen is a great option. Note: adding protein powder or collagen powder will thicken your smoothies, so you may want to add some additional liquid to your recipe (this is a personal preference).
- Replace the ground flaxseed. Swap out the ground flax for another nutrient rich ingredient, like chia seeds or hemp hearts.
- Use a different liquid. I personally love smoothies with coconut water, and it tastes great in this recipe. Coconut water is low in sugar and full of electrolytes, vitamins, and nutrients making it a great option for smoothies. Using unsweetened almond milk is another popular choice for smoothies. Replace the orange juice quantity one-for-one with liquid of choice.
How to Make Mixed Fruit Smoothies with Banana and Spinach
Step 1: In the basin of a standard-size blender, pour in half of the orange juice.
Step 2: Then add the banana, spinach, flax, yogurt. If adding protein powder, add at this time too.
Step 3: Then add the frozen fruit.
Step 4: Top with the remaining orange juice.
Step 5: Tightly secure the lid of the blender and blend until smooth.
Step 6: Divide between two-three glasses and enjoy!
Homemade Smoothie Expert Tips
Follow these tips for the very best mixed fruit smoothie with spinach!
Tip 1. Placing part of the liquid into your blender first matters, it helps with blending.
Tip 2. You want to add your spinach early on when putting your ingredients into your blender so the other ingredients can squish it down (there is A LOT of spinach in here, which is good!). This also helps to make room for more fruit.
Possible Dietary Restrictions?
This frozen fruit smoothie recipe can easily be modified to fit a lot of dietary needs! As written, this recipe is vegetarian and gluten-free. A few notes to make sure this easy green smoothie recipe fits your diet:
- Make this into a vegan or dairy-free smoothie recipe by selecting a non-dairy yogurt.
- For those adding the optional protein powder to this smoothie, make sure to pick a protein powder that fits your dietary needs.
- Those who follow a vegetarian diet can use whey protein powder or a plant-based protein powder. Those on a gluten free diet can use either of these proteins as well, but should confirm the protein selected notes it’s gf on the label
- Those following a dairy free or vegan diet should select a plant-based protein powder that meets this dietary requirement (it should verify this on the label).
Helpful Equipment
A good quality blender. You may be wondering what the best blender for frozen fruit smoothies is. This is the blender we are currently using, and it has been working great! I like this blender because it is a simple, no-frills blender at a modest price point.
Recipe FAQs
Either is fine for smoothies, but I like to use frozen fruit because it is so convenient. Especially in a recipe like this that has several varieties of fruit in it, buying a bag of frozen mixed fruit is just so easy. No need to buy a large amount of fresh fruit or cut anything. However, if you and/or your family eats a lot of fresh fruit, that may be a better option for you.
Yes you can! If you choose to make this smoothie the night before, I would recommend giving it another quick blend in the morning or placing it in a shaker cup. Note: your smoothie will be a little thicker and the color will be more green if you let it sit overnight. Not a big deal, I just don’t want you to be surprised! Making this the night ahead is a great option if you have a busy morning or need to take your smoothie to go.
If you have a smaller-sized blender, like a Ninja single-serve or Nutribullet, halve (or quarter) the recipe to fit your needs.
Spinach is one of the best greens for smoothies because of it’s mild taste. Once blended with the other smoothie ingredients, you generally can’t even taste it!
Kale, Swiss chard, and collard greens are other popular leafy greens that can also be used in smoothies. Please note that all of these options have a much stronger flavor than spinach and can be somewhat bitter. These options are best paired with sweet fruits and stronger flavors to help mask their flavor.
